Ventilation & Dewatering Drilling — The Challenge

Every underground mine faces two structural safety demands: moving enough air to control gas, and removing enough water to keep the workings dry. Both are delivered from surface by large-diameter boreholes — ventilation shafts and dewatering wells — and both are hard to drill. The holes must be wide (typically Φ500–Φ1100 mm), deep (from 250 m down past 900 m), and precisely vertical, while passing through hard abrasive rock, fractured zones and water-bearing ground that defeat ordinary rigs with wall collapse, stuck pipe and slow penetration.

CORTECH® truck-mounted large-diameter rigs are built for exactly this work. The CMD100 (100 t pullback, 559 kW top drive) and the CMD130 (130 t pullback, 567 kW / 31,000 Nm) run staged diameter programs — pilot hole, surface casing, DTH drilling and raise reaming — that keep the bore stable and on line from the first opening to total depth.

The six real projects below cover both sides of this hub: ventilation shafts that restored airflow and cut gas risk, and dewatering wells that drained flooded or rising-water mines. Every depth, diameter and duration figure is taken from the completed project record.

Application Sub-Segments & Rig Selection

Ventilation shafts and dewatering wells share one rig family but demand different diameter and circulation strategies:

  • Deep, large-diameter ventilation shafts (300–920 m, finished Φ500–Φ710 mm) — drilled by pilot hole then staged raise reaming through hard, fractured rock. The CMD100 handled 254–303 m shafts; the heavier CMD130 handled the 920 m shaft.
  • Gas-control ventilation boreholes for coal mines — a repeatable Φ216 mm pilot → Φ470 mm → Φ710 mm reaming process on the CMD100, typically finished in 25–26 days.
  • Permanent dewatering boreholes — an oversized cased surface section (Φ1100 mm) stepped down to a productive Φ650 mm hole drilled to 253 m on the CMD100, giving a large throat for high-volume pumping.
  • Emergency / rescue dewatering wells — air reverse circulation with dual-wall pipe and large DTH bits in fractured, high-inflow ground, as in the Henan Φ710 mm × 280 m well.

Rig match: CMD100 for 250–300 m-class shafts and dewatering wells; CMD130 for deep (900 m+) large-diameter ventilation shafts. Both mobilize on their own truck chassis with six hydraulic outriggers.

Large-Diameter Reaming Capability

The reaming sequence — not the rig's headline pullback — decides whether a large ventilation borehole stays vertical and gauge. Typical proven sequences in this hub:

Proven staged reaming sequences from completed projects in this application hub
Stage Diameter Rate of penetration Reference project
Pilot hole (DTH) Φ216–Φ350 mm 254 m in 2 days (Qinyuan) Qinyuan staged-reamed ventilation shaft
First reaming pass Φ470 mm 3–5 m/h Coal mine ventilation borehole (CMD100)
Final reaming pass Φ500–Φ710 mm 3–5 m/h CMD130 920 m large-diameter ventilation shaft (Shandong)
Dewatering stepped program Φ1100 → Φ900 → Φ650 mm 253 m total depth Φ1100→Φ650 dewatering borehole program (CMD100)

Ventilation Shaft or Dewatering Well — Which Rig?

  • Mine ventilation shaft drilling (airflow, gas control): depth usually 250–920 m, finished Φ500–Φ710 mm, verticality critical → CMD100 up to ~300 m; CMD130 beyond 300 m.
  • Mine dewatering borehole drilling (water control, flooded-mine recovery): depth usually 250–300 m, large throat for pumps, water-bearing fractured ground → CMD100 with air reverse circulation; emergency wells favor the Φ710 mm × 280 m Henan setup.

Proven Projects: Mine Ventilation Shafts

  • Deep Mine Ventilation Shaft — Datong (CMD100). Aged mine retrofit through hard abrasive rock: Φ350 mm cased opening, Φ254 mm DTH pilot to the roadway, staged reaming to finished Φ500 mm, completed in 43 days at 303 m depth; wall stable and vertical, gas risk reduced.
  • Mine Ventilation Shaft Reaming — Qinyuan (CMD100). Interbedded, faulted strata: Φ216 mm pilot of 254 m drilled in 2 days, then raise reaming Φ470 mm → Φ710 mm at 3–5 m/h; full shaft handed over in 26 days with a gauge, non-collapsed wall.
  • Large-Diameter Ventilation Shaft — Shandong (CMD130). Deep hard rock with developed fractures: finished Φ710 mm shaft to 920 m in 32 days using cluster DTH hammers and staged reaming; construction quality rated excellent, ventilation met design.
  • Coal Mine Ventilation Borehole — standard CMD100 process. Φ216 mm pilot to 254 m in 2 days, reamed Φ470 mm then finished Φ710 mm at 3–5 m/h; pilot plus both reaming passes finished in 25 days.

Proven Projects: Mine Dewatering Wells

  • Mine Dewatering Borehole — staged diameter program (CMD100). Φ1100 mm first opening with surface casing, Φ900 mm DTH second section to 13 m, reduced to Φ650 mm at 7 m and continued to a final depth of 253 m — a reusable large-throat drainage design.
  • Emergency Dewatering Rescue Well — Henan (CMD100). Severely fractured, high-inflow ground: Φ710 mm × 280 m well drilled in 18 days by air reverse circulation with dual-wall pipe, delivering more than 5,000 m³/day of drainage and enabling the mine restart.

FAQ

What diameter and depth do your ventilation and dewatering rigs cover?

Finished Φ500–Φ1100 mm at 253–303 m on the CMD100, and a finished Φ710 mm ventilation shaft to 920 m on the CMD130. Finished diameters are stepped from a smaller pilot to design size.

How do you keep a large ventilation borehole vertical and stable?

A cased surface opening, a straight DTH pilot to the target level, then staged raise reaming with controlled wall stabilization. In the Datong and Qinyuan projects the pilot confirmed line before any reaming, and the finished wall was stable and gauge.

Which method handles water-bearing, fractured ground for dewatering?

Air reverse circulation with dual-wall drill pipe and large DTH bits, which lifts cuttings and water together. In Henan this drilled a Φ710 mm × 280 m well in 18 days through severely fractured, high-inflow ground, draining over 5,000 m³/day.

How do I choose between the CMD100 and the CMD130?

CMD100 for 250–300 m-class ventilation shafts and dewatering wells (100 t pullback, 559 kW). CMD130 for deep, large-diameter shafts past 900 m (130 t pullback, 567 kW / 31,000 Nm). Send your depth and diameter and we will confirm the match.

Who do I deal with — the manufacturer or a trading company?

Both, and they sit in the same group. CORTECH® rigs are built in-house by a specialist manufacturing subsidiary of Jinneng Holding Equipment Manufacturing Group (Fortune Global 500 parent Jinneng Holding Group), holding API 4F (No. 4F-0504) and CE certificates No. 8603312 / 8603313 / 8603314. Export contracts, documentation, spare parts and after-sales are handled by Shanxi Jincheng Anthracite Mining Group International Trading Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Jinneng Holding Equipment Manufacturing Group — so the exporter you sign with is part of the same group as the factory.
