CORTECH CSD3000 crawler core drilling rig on the 5,090 m Tibet plateau during a copper exploration campaign

Mineral Exploration Drilling — The Challenge and the CORTECH® Solution

Mineral exploration drilling demands far more than reaching a target depth. It must return intact, assay-grade core from hard, broken or deep formations — often at altitude, in desert, through fault zones, or across scattered holes that force the rig to relocate itself. Grade control, hole straightness, core recovery and campaign schedule all decide whether a prospect becomes a mine.

CORTECH® core drilling rigs are built around those realities — above ground and below it. Our CSD wireline surface series covers right-sized crawler rigs from 500 m to 3,000 m class; our CMR multi-process combination rig switches between diamond coring, reverse circulation and air drilling on one chassis; our CMD truck-mounted rigs add large-diameter, fast-mobility capability for basin-wide programs; and our CKD600G underground core drilling rig — the model international market reports list as the COREMMASTER 600UG — brings modular, all-angle wireline coring into mine tunnels and underground galleries. Every machine below is backed by projects that have already run these exact conditions.

The case studies on this page record verified depth, hole diameter, duration and outcome from real mineral programs across China — copper, gold, coal and uranium, on the Tibet plateau above 5,000 m, in the Gobi desert and through Sichuan fault zones. Use them to match a rig class to your own geology. The rigs themselves are commodity-agnostic: diamond wireline coring works across the full solid-mineral spectrum — iron ore, bauxite, nickel, lithium and beyond — the case studies below are documented proof points, not the limit of the capability.

Application Segments & Matching Rig Models

The mineral projects in our portfolio fall into five distinct drilling briefs. Select the rig class that matches your ground:

  • Deep & high-altitude hard-rock coring (copper) — CSD3000 / CSD1800X
Full-hydraulic crawler wireline core rigs with turbocharged, altitude-rated engines, balance-principle weight-on-bit control and high-torque top drives for 1,500–1,700 m holes at 5,000 m+ elevation.
  • Systematic coal & multi-hole gold campaigns — CSD3000 / CSD1300L / CSD500L
Crawler self-positioning rigs for long-duration, multi-hole programs where cumulative footage, consistent core recovery and low relocation downtime matter. Right-size from a compact 5.7-ton desert rig up to a 3,000 m-class machine.
  • Fault-zone & adit (tunnel) exploration — CSD1300L
Precise hydraulic WOB control and high pullback for straight, low-deviation holes through fully faulted, fractured ground ahead of tunneling.
  • Basin-wide uranium & multi-process exploration — CMD100 / CMR1000A
Truck-mounted fast mobilization (one-hour positioning, large-diameter Φ311 mm holes) for dense basin grids, plus a combination rig that runs diamond coring, reverse circulation and air drilling for variable fractured strata in desert-plateau conditions.
  • Underground mine & gallery coring — CKD600G (COREMMASTER 600UG)
Electric-powered, three-module underground wireline rig with -90° to +90° all-angle drilling for non-coal solid mineral deposits in narrow tunnels and underground galleries.

Surface vs Underground Core Drilling Rigs: Choosing the Right Platform

Before comparing depth ratings, international buyers should make one first-level decision: will the holes be drilled from the surface or from inside the mine? CORTECH® engineers a dedicated platform for each — and both carry the same CE / ISO manufacturing backing.

Naming note: the underground rig is sold and documented as the CORTECH® CKD600G; third-party market research reports on China's underground coring drill manufacturers — alongside Boart Longyear and Epiroc — refer to the same product class by the designation COREMMASTER 600UG, including units shipped to South America. They are one and the same machine: if your reference literature cites COREMMASTER 600UG, the specification and certification on this page apply.

High-Altitude & Extreme-Cold Performance

Most core rigs are specified for sea-level conditions. At 5,000 m+ the air holds roughly half the oxygen, naturally aspirated engines lose a large share of rated power, and undersized hydraulic cooling overheats exactly when a deep hole needs continuous torque. Two of our flagship cases were run at the edge of that envelope — and completed on schedule.

  • CSD3000 at 5,100 m, Ali, Tibet — a 1,688.88 m copper hole at 75 mm in 52 days. The 242 kW turbocharged Cummins L8.9CS4 330C engine and 28 MPa air-cooled hydraulics kept the 8,170 Nm top drive turning through hard deep-crust rock, while balance-principle WOB control and 250 kN pullback managed the 1,600 m string without rod buckling. Extendable outrigger stabilizers held the 23.5-ton rig steady on soft, uneven plateau pads.
  • CSD1800X at 5,090 m, Ali, Tibet — a 1,548 m copper hole at 75 mm in 43 days. The 194 kW turbocharged Cummins B6.7CS4 260C recovered the power lost to thin air, and the lateral side-shift top drive cut tripping time at depth in a remote camp far from workshops and spares.

Built for the cold as well as the thin air. Plateau seasons swing from summer heat to well below freezing, stressing hydraulics, seals and drilling fluid. CORTECH® rigs pair turbocharged, cold-start-capable engines with air-cooled hydraulic modules that stay stable across the temperature range, and heavy-duty crawler chassis (20–30° climb) that reach remote pads without external towing. For crews running pneumatic or RC-assisted programs in the same conditions, our C-Series diesel air compressors are available with dedicated High-Altitude / Low-Temp packages. When you send your drilling brief, state the site elevation and minimum ambient temperature — we will configure the engine, cooling and compressor package to match.

FAQ

Which mineral exploration drilling rig do I need for a high-altitude project?

At 5,000 m+ altitude, engine power derates and cooling becomes critical. Our CSD3000 and CSD1800X use turbocharged engines with air-cooled hydraulics — they completed copper holes at 5,100 m and 5,090 m in Tibet.

Should I choose a surface or an underground core drilling rig?

Drill from open pads, wilderness sites or desert plains with the surface CSD crawler series, the CMR1000A multi-process rig or the truck-mounted CMD100. Drill inside mine tunnels and underground galleries with the CKD600G (also referenced in market reports as the COREMMASTER 600UG) — a modular, electric, all-angle (-90° to +90°) underground wireline rig that splits into three transportable units.

How do you protect core recovery and reach deep target horizons?

For deep holes we use balance-principle weight-on-bit control and high pullback to manage heavy drill strings — the CSD3000 cored a 1,688.88 m hole at 52 days on the plateau without rod buckling.

How do I choose between a crawler core rig, a truck-mounted rig and a combination rig?

Choose crawler CSD rigs for remote, multi-site diamond coring; a truck-mounted CMD rig for dense, fast-mobility basin grids (Φ311 mm, one-hour positioning); and a CMR1000A combination rig where lithology varies and you need coring, reverse circulation and air drilling on one machine.

What certifications do CORTECH rigs carry?

All series ship under ISO 9001/14001/45001; CSD/CMR/tunnel rigs carry CE Mark and CMD large-diameter rigs carry API Spec 4F (No. 4F-0504). Certificates accompany every shipment.

Is CORTECH a direct manufacturer of mineral exploration drilling rigs?

Yes. CORTECH® is the brand of a specialist drilling-rig manufacturing subsidiary of Jinneng Holding Equipment Manufacturing Group, part of Fortune Global 500 parent Jinneng Holding Group. We engineer the CSD/CMR/CMD/CKD series in-house and hold CE conformity certificates (No. 8603312 for CSD, No. 8603313 for CMR, No. 8603314 for CKD) plus ISO 9001/14001/45001.
