Mine Rescue Drilling — The Challenge and the CORTECH® Solution

When a mine incident happens, the clock starts before the rig even arrives. Roof falls, collapses and water inrushes cut ventilation, food, water and communication, and every hour spent opening a life passage is measured in survival conditions for the trapped crew. A mine rescue drilling rig has to do four things that ordinary production rigs do not: mobilize fast into sites that roads and rubble have made unreachable, drill accurately to a moving or estimated target, open holes large enough for air, supplies or a rescue capsule, and stay reliable when everything underground is unstable.

CORTECH® builds the CMD large-diameter series around those demands. Rescue deployment is a standard configuration of the whole series — the truck-mounted CMD100, the CMD130, the crawler CMD130L and electric CMD130DL, the modular CMD150 and CMD180, and the lightweight modular CMD50L. The CMD100 and the CMD50L are simply the two models with the most recorded rescue deployments, because they cover the two most common rescue tasks: a vertical life passage or supply hole from the surface, and a horizontal life passage driven into a confined mine or tunnel space.

On this page we bring together our real rescue projects: a one-hour emergency mobilization that opened a 117 m life passage in under 5 hours and helped save 8 miners, a supply hole drilled through in 8 hours for miners trapped 36 hours, a large-diameter shaft that lowered a 660 mm rescue capsule, and a modular rig flown into a confined space to drill a horizontal 600 mm x 80 m rescue borehole in 6 hours. Every figure below is recorded from the actual project or national rescue exercise.

The CMD Series — Every Model Is a Rescue Rig

Rescue work is not a special-purpose variant that sits beside the product line. It is a configuration of the same platform: a full hydraulic top drive with enough pullback and torque to run heavy casing strings, an air DTH hammer method that penetrates broken ground without flooding the workings with drilling fluid, a mast that can be rigged up fast, and a chassis chosen for the access route the emergency actually allows. Each CMD model carries the same API Spec 4F licensed drilling structure, the same ISO-certified production system and the same API 4F-0504 monogram license; what differs between them is mobility, power and maximum hole size — and those three differences are exactly what a rescue commander selects on.

Rescue Task Segments & Matching Rig Models

Mine rescue drilling breaks down into several distinct tasks, and no single rig optimizes all of them. CORTECH covers the main rescue segments across the CMD series:

  • Emergency life-passage / supply-hole drilling (vertical, to depth) — CMD100 and CMD130 truck-mounted rigs
Rapid road mobilization, air DTH hammer drilling, directional control to reach the trapped zone accurately. Used in real water-inrush and supply-hole responses to 117 m.
  • Large-diameter rescue shaft / capsule lowering — CMD100 with a cluster DTH hammer array, or the higher-pullback CMD130 / CMD150 / CMD180 for deeper shafts
Opens 711 mm-class holes in hard, broken ground, large enough to run a manned rescue capsule (660 mm demonstrated).
  • Confined-space & horizontal rescue — CMD50L lightweight modular rig
Splits into small, air-transportable modules for mines, tunnels and collapsed sites where heavy trucks cannot reach; dedicated spiral drill pipe plus a cluster DTH hammer drills horizontal life passages (600 mm × 80 m).
  • Impassable-access rescue — crawler CMD130L / CMD130DL
Tracked chassis walks to the scene over rubble and soft ground when no truck route survives, and the CMD130DL electric package keeps emissions out of confined workings.

Representative Case Studies From This Hub

Five real projects back this page — four life-passage and supply-hole operations plus one emergency dewatering rescue well. Select a case for the full record:

1. Zhongcun Coal Mine water inrush, 2016 — CMD100

Incident
Water inrush at Zhongcun Coal Mine, Jincheng, Shanxi. 12 miners trapped 117 m below ground with rising water, shrinking space, severely limited oxygen and a completely interrupted supply line.
Response
A CMD100 truck-mounted rig already working at a nearby site was dispatched on the rescue order. From the moment of the order it took one hour to relocate, install, commission and start drilling.
Result
Large-diameter air fast drilling with directional control opened the 117 m life passage in under 5 hours. Oxygen, nutrient solution and medicine were delivered to the trapped zone and a stable communication link was established. 8 of the 12 trapped miners were rescued.

2. Trapped-miner supply hole — CMD100

Task
A supply borehole to miners already trapped for 36 hours — the passage had to reach them and stay open long enough to keep passing food, water and medicine through.
Program
Two-stage casing: a 311 mm first opening to 11.18 m with 245 mm surface casing to seal off loose surface ground, then 215.9 mm to 117 m through the roadway, lined with 139.7 mm casing to protect the borehole wall.
Result
Drilled through in 8 hours with an air DTH hammer — fast, clean penetration with no drilling fluid added to already hazardous mine conditions.

3. Large-diameter rescue shaft with capsule — CMD100

Scenario
National mine rescue drilling technology and equipment exercise, Weinan, Shaanxi, simulating a roof-fall and collapse. The test was whether domestic equipment could satisfy all four requirements at once: drilling in complex strata, opening a large-diameter hole, lowering a rescue capsule, and deploying fast.
Setup
CMD100 truck-mounted rig with a 711 mm large-diameter cluster DTH hammer, air positive-circulation drilling, site layout fully simulating a real collapse.
Result
The large-diameter rescue borehole was completed and a 660 mm rescue capsule lowered with zero equipment faults and no deviation on the capsule. All performance indicators met national mine rescue technical standards.

4. Air-transportable modular horizontal rescue hole — CMD50L

Scenario
Mine accident emergency rescue exercise by the Special Exploration Center, China National Administration of Coal Geology — a national professional rescue team testing roof-fall and collapse scenarios and the ability to build a large-diameter life passage rapidly.
Setup
CMD50L modular rescue rig: lightweight modular design with single-unit transport weight ≤ 20 t for rapid air-transport deployment, suited to the narrow spaces of mines and tunnels. Dedicated spiral drill pipe and a cluster DTH hammer give it strong horizontal drilling capability.
Result
A 600 mm diameter, 80 m deep horizontal rescue borehole completed in 6 hours, with the rescue capsule successfully delivered. The machine ran stably, was easy to operate, was highly praised by the rescue team and has since been included in the national emergency equipment reserve system.

5. Emergency dewatering rescue well, Henan — CMD100

Task
A flooded legacy mine with rising water threatening safe production: a large-diameter emergency dewatering rescue well was needed to remove the water and restart the mine.
Setup
Severely fractured ground with very high inflow defeated conventional wall protection. Air reverse circulation with dual-wall drill pipe and large DTH bits lifted cuttings and water together.
Result
A 710 mm × 280 m well completed in 18 days, draining more than 5,000 m³/day and enabling the restart of the mine.

Emergency Response Capability — What Each Rescue Job Needs

Government and mining-group rescue departments screen suppliers against a short list of operational questions: how fast can the rig be on site, how large a hole can it open, how deep can it reach, and what can it be used for once it is there. The table below answers those questions with figures taken from completed rescue projects.

Proven mine rescue response parameters from completed projects
Rescue job Rig Hole diameter Depth reached Time Outcome / status
Vertical life passage after water inrush CMD100 Large-diameter air fast hole, directionally controlled 117 m 1 h to spud, under 5 h to break through 8 of 12 trapped miners rescued; oxygen, nutrition and medicine delivered
Supply hole to trapped miners CMD100 311 mm → 11.18 m (245 mm surface casing), then 215.9 mm (139.7 mm lining) 117 m 8 h First nutrition reached miners trapped 36 h; borehole kept open
Manned rescue shaft with capsule CMD100 with 711 mm cluster DTH hammer 711 mm — Zero faults, zero deviation 660 mm rescue capsule lowered; national rescue technical standards met
Horizontal life passage in confined space CMD50L 600 mm 80 m 6 h Rescue capsule delivered; rig now in the national emergency equipment reserve
Emergency dewatering rescue well CMD100 710 mm 280 m 18 days Over 5,000 m³/day drainage; mine restart enabled
Deep, large-diameter rescue shaft CMD130 / CMD150 / CMD180 820 mm maximum drilling diameter (CMD130) Scaled to the target horizon Configuration-dependent Higher pullback and torque reserve for shafts beyond the CMD100 envelope; modular models reach sites with no crane or road access

FAQ

How fast can a mine rescue drilling rig reach and start drilling?
It depends on proximity. In the Zhongcun water-inrush response, a CMD100 working at a nearby site relocated, set up, commissioned and spudded within 1 hour of the order, then opened the 117 m life passage in under 5 hours.
Which CMD series models can be used for mine rescue work?
All of them. Rescue deployment is a standard configuration of the whole CMD large-diameter series, from the 55 t truck-mounted CMD100 through the CMD130, crawler CMD130L and electric CMD130DL, to the modular CMD150 and CMD180. The CMD100 and the lightweight modular CMD50L are the two models with the most recorded rescue deployments: vertical life passages, supply holes and large-diameter capsule shafts on the CMD100, and horizontal life passages in confined spaces on the CMD50L.
What diameter can a rescue borehole reach?
For manned rescue, large: a CMD100 with a 711 mm cluster DTH hammer opened a large-diameter rescue borehole and successfully lowered a 660 mm rescue capsule with zero faults. For supply holes, a 311 mm lead section to 11.18 m with 245 mm surface casing, then 215.9 mm to 117 m, is a proven two-stage program.
Which rig suits confined or horizontal rescue spaces?
The CMD50L lightweight modular rig: its units are small and light enough for rapid air transport, fit narrow mine and tunnel spaces, and drill horizontal holes — in the exercise, a 600 mm × 80 m horizontal rescue borehole in 6 hours.
How does a rescue rig handle unstable, water-bearing strata?
Air DTH / air fast drilling with directional control: it penetrates broken, water-bearing ground fast without adding drilling fluid. In the Zhongcun operation this approach delivered oxygen, nutrient solution and medicine to miners trapped 117 m deep, supporting the rescue of 8 miners.
Is CORTECH a direct manufacturer of mine rescue drilling rigs?
Yes. CORTECH® is the brand of a specialist drilling-equipment manufacturing subsidiary of Jinneng Holding Equipment Manufacturing Group, part of Fortune Global 500 enterprise Jinneng Holding Group. The CMD series is designed, engineered and tested in-house under ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018, with API Spec 4F and CE certification, and you deal with one accountable contact point for the rig, its certificates, spare parts and after-sales support.
